Bitwise and Coinbase Executives Back CCIP’s Split Model for Real-World Blockchain Use

Executives from Bitwise and Coinbase argue that Chainlink's decision to separate message confirmation from execution is crucial for enabling cross-chain finance for institutions.
CCIP's Design Choice
CCIP (Chainlink's Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol) separates the process of confirming a cross-chain message from its execution. While this might seem like a technical detail, these executives believe it's the key to making the protocol practical for real-world finance.
This design choice carries weight as both Bitwise and Coinbase have significant investments in CCIP. Bitwise President Teddy Fusaro has actively promoted CCIP, while Coinbase has moved a multi-billion-dollar wrapped asset business onto the protocol.
How CCIP Works
CCIP follows a logic similar to asset transfers between blockchains. Message confirmation, validating the transaction's validity, is separate from asset execution on the destination chain.
It leverages a decentralized oracle network (DON) where independent operators collectively verify information, eliminating single-point failures. A default Committee Verifier, consisting of 16 independent node operators, is supported by CCIP 2.0, which also offers optional Cross-Chain Verifiers for enhanced security.
The Market Adoption
In late 2025, Coinbase chose CCIP as the exclusive bridge for its wrapped assets, valued at approximately $7 billion at the time. BitGo followed in early 2026, migrating its WBTC holdings (over $7.7 billion) to CCIP.
CCIP 2.0, launched on September 28, 2026, introduced the 16-node Committee Verifier and optional verifier layer, facilitating over $15 billion in asset migrations shortly after its launch. Currently, CCIP secures over $84 billion in cross-chain value.
Bitwise's Perspective
Fusaro discussed CCIP's adoption at Chainlink's Link:NYC event in October 2026, highlighting its growing appeal among institutions. Coinbase executives have also emphasized the importance of separating confirmation from execution.
Beyond Chainlink
With significant market adoption, CCIP's security design is now of interest beyond Chainlink's community. The protocol's quality is crucial for custodians and exchanges like Coinbase and BitGo.
Moving forward, investors will watch for:
- Additional custodians and exchanges committing exclusively to CCIP.
- The uptake of optional Cross-Chain Verifiers by institutional users seeking enhanced security.
